He's not misogynistic the way Leland is, and McClane mostly kills only in self defense, while Leland executes captured Terrorists simply because he thinks they are about to try and lecture him on the righteousness of their cause. Adaptational Heroism: He's much more sympathetic than his book counterpart.Adaptation Name Change: He was Joe Leland in the book, as opposed to John McClane in the films.Only his resilience and determination allows him to save the day. In the first movie especially, he makes some serious mistakes and is frequently forced to retreat.
